Past job: Executive Director, NYC Media Lab

Q. Favorite spot for a coffee meeting? Washington Square Park

Q. Describe how a skill you learned in a previous job helped you in your current job. NYC Media Lab gave me a solid perch to learn about emerging media and technology, and that expertise is something I still trade on today as a researcher and journalist.

Q. Job advice in three words? Show some interest

Q. How are you (or your company) currently bridging the gap between innovation and regulation? Tech Policy Press covers issues at the intersection of technology, power, policy and people. We write about and convene around these issues precisely. The goal is to bring people together from a variety of backgrounds to look at these questions, in order to advance this crucial dialogue.

Q. What can innovators learn from policymakers? To think about the unintended consequences of your decisions. Policymakers have to go through an excruciating deliberative process to make change- and sometimes they still make mistakes.

Q. What can policymakers learn from innovators? There is a lot of potential in technology to solve problems, if it can be harnessed for good and we have the right guardrails in place. We need government and public systems and mechanisms that are responsive to the potential of innovation.

Q. Favorite book/podcast/long-form article you recommend? The Idea of the Public Sphere: A Reader.

Q. Everyday is probably different, but can you describe a "day in the life" of your job? Reading, writing and arithmetic, and talking to people! I try to talk to a lot of people and interview them for pieces I am writing.

Q. Do you have a morning routine? I drink four to five cups of coffee while listening to WNYC and reading newspapers online.

Q. How often do you work from home? 95% of the time these days.

Q. Which Member of Congress is the most tech savvy? My MoC, Yvette Clarke, is surprisingly tech savvy and engaged on tech issues.

Q. How do you unwind? I like to walk my dog!
